Why Juan Fernández?

With deep sadness we must say we cannot help all earthquake’s victims in Chile. Although we wish we could!!! We have chosen the Archipelago of Juan Fernandez and its inhabitants due to the following reasons.

Creators of this website and the charity action belong to multinational, worldwide society of ham radio operators (learn more about ham radio here). Due to Juan Fernandez’s remote location, off the beaten track, the archipelago became one of most wanted locations in the world to be sought on the airwaves. The main island of the archipelago – Isla Róbinson Crusoe – has often been a host of numerous ham radio enthusiasts coming to the island to activate it on ham bands on many radio frequencies. They let people around the world to make wireless contacts with the island.

Thanks to islanders’ hospitality and generous help, those – so called DXpeditions – were always successful and remarkable, bringing a real excitement to hams worldwide.

Now it’s time to give something to the islanders from us, hams, in return. Thanks to numerous members of the ham radio world’s society we have a chance to help them. Even small donations will count. Islander’s needs to recover the island and their daily life are enormous. The island is located off the beaten track, and unlike many Chilean, popular tourist destinations, islanders’ income does not rely on frequent visitors. Since their fishery infrastructure (the main source of income) is ruined now, they have no resources to live there anymore. Since the most recent earthquake in mainland Chile resulted in massive damage, especially around the city of Concepcion, affecting a million people, suffering and loss of those 600 inhabitants living at the island may easily be forgotten in  those massive needs of the entire country. This is why we will try to help them. Maybe it’s a drop in the ocean of Chile’s needs now, but this will mean something anyway. Who can deny those 600 people do not need help?

Hope our motives convince you to join forces and hope you’re convinced to donate to the island and its inhabitants.

All donations collected will be transferred directly to the island’s authorities. They know best what are the prime restoration needs now.
